Telecommunication major, MTN, has paid N80
billion out of the N330 billion fine imposed on it by the Nigerian government
for failing to deactivate more than 5 million unregistered SIM cards. According
to the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, who disclosed this, the
payment was for this first year and is the first tranche of the total payment. The
country’s largest mobile operator was initially fined $5.2 billion (N1.04
trillion) for failing to deactivate the unregistered SIM cards, N200,000 per
SIM, but the fine was later reduced to N330 bllion.
